Swansea is a coastal city and county in Wales with a population of around 250,000 people. Swansea’s economy was originally based on metals and mining, especially in the copper industry. The decline of these heavy industries has resulted in a depressed economy with higher rates of unemployment and considerably lower annual gross median earnings compared to the UK average. The Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation (WIMD) shows Swansea area as one the highest in need.
There is a long-held tradition of horse ownership in this area and this continues to this day, despite the economic decline in the region. Unfortunately, lack of resources and education often lead to equine welfare issues.
Our concern for the welfare of the urban horses in Swansea drove our motivation to start helping this community. Our solution is geared towards the unique challenges posed in the local context, winning the trust of the communities and building bridges through tact, empathy and, above all, education.
